Electro Detectors. From Windsor Castle to Primark Stores

February 3, 2021

Radio fire detection first became available in the early 1980′s. At that time there were many National Trust and English Heritage properties, as well as privately owned dwellings in the UK, that were desperately seeking an alternative to hardwired systems with all of the complications and disruption that such a system would bring.

Since 1988 Electro Detectors have been producing radio fire alarm systems that are available throughout the UK and Ireland. They were the first company to release a radio sounder and the first company to manufacture a combined sounder/detector. The systems are fully addressable and can provide cover for every application from a small private dwelling to a system in excess of 3000 heads.

Over the last few decades, radio fire systems have dramatically increased in reliability whilst reducing in both size and price. Todays’ systems from Electro Detectors boast a long battery life and are as reliable as hardwired systems. Not only are these systems installed in historic buildings where wires cannot be run, but also in a whole host of other premises. These include buildings where disruption is a nuisance, temporary projects, and systems that need to be installed in a hurry whilst still remaining competitive.

Windsor Castle

Protecting several separate buildings at Windsor castle, the Millennium systems are all linked back to a graphics package running at the fire station. After the fire in the Great Hall, Electro Detectors were asked to install a temporary system whilst the refurbishment took place. As the system was installed so easily, without the need for any cables and with minimal disruption, it was decided that the equipment would be used for permanent systems in other areas of the castle

Primark Rotherham

One particular store Primark in Rotherham required a new fire detection and alarm system, but because of asbestos issues within the building a decision was made to use a wireless system.Because of the asbestos issues in the building a wired system was not an option. So a decision was made to use the Zerio Plus wireless system from Electro Detectors. A specialist asbestos contractor was employed to fix the detector bases to the ceilings. The systems consists of a 20 Zone Zerio Plus control panel with a network of 5 wireless signal boosters looking after approximately 160 field devices.

The Zerio Plus system offers the flexibility and ease of installation that Thameside, the installation company, required for this project. The installation was carried out with minimum disruption to the day to day running of the store and installed on time and within budget.

The Zerio Plus system offers an ideal solution for sites that have installation issues. It is also an ideal solution where installations have to be carried out whilst causing minimum disruption to the clients daily business.
