Northwood Technology and 'Celebrity Bainisteoir 2010'
A tremendous honour was bestowed upon our club when the intermediate football team of Ballymun Kickhams was selected to be Dublin's representatives in the 'Celebrity Bainisteoir 2010' competition run by RTE. And excitement levels within the club reached fever pitch when the celebrity was revealed to the team and club members, as none other than Mairead Farrell. Her status as one of Ireland's foremost broadcasters and a renowned member of 'The Panel' on RTE, instantly had not only the club, but the whole community talking about the club's participation in the competition. Mairead instantly immersed herself into both the team and the club, with her son, participating in the club's academy summer camp, and Mairead attending, and slowly beginning to take over the training sessions for the team. The training however, hit an all time high in intensity stakes, when mentor to Mairead and Dublin legend, Ciaran Whelan attended a mid week training session. The professionalism and intensity of that session had not only the team exhausted, but most of the onlookers exhausted also!
Ballymun have been drawn to play against Fermoy, Cork, and the decision to play at home or away was made by an obstacle course challenge laid down to both teams in the army camp, in the Curragh. Following a more than dubious finale, and a sudden death tug of war to decide the staging of the event, Fermoy emerged as victors. But this is only the start of the battle. The dubious nature of the defeat will not be forgotten by the men from Ballymun. The game is due to take place on Saturday evening, 31st July in Fermoy, and it is hoped that the club will be running buses down to ferry all the support we can muster for this tremendous occasion, and in turn, to help the lads by supporting them to victory over Fermoy.
In the years that this competition has been run, no Dublin club has ever won the 1st round game. Ballymun intend to grind that statistic firmly down with a victory, and hopefully a home game for the second round.
The team, executive committee and club members would like to thank Paul Hennessy and Padraic Cafferty of Northwood Technology Ltd who have committed much needed funds in this difficult time, and would ask, where possible, that we in turn support the sponsors.
Regards Kevin Brady

Police in the UK turn up the heat with FLIR hand-held thermal cameras that let them see in the dark
Thieves, consider yourselves warned – police can now see in the dark.
This image, taken with a thermal imaging camera, shows how officers can catch and record night-time marauders in the act.
They have been using the heat-seeking technology from helicopters for several years, but now will have a hand-held camera they can carry along on patrol.
Caught in the act: A shot from Cumbria Constabulary's thermal imaging camera
In the line of sight: An officer demonstrates how the new camera is used
Makers of the camera – a smaller version of technology used on the battlefield – say it can produce clear images from 1,100 yards away.
Officers in Cumbria are among the first in the country to buy one of these cameras and yesterday showed off how they hope it will help them catch criminals.
In the top photograph, a trio of intruders was spotted cutting a hole in a wire fence at night.
Inspector Richard Quinn said: ‘We have recently seen a rise in the number of burglaries in isolated and rural areas which can be more vulnerable to thieves and more difficult to investigate. ‘We are committed to preventing and detecting these sorts of crimes and are using the most up-to-date technology to help us track down offenders.
‘Trained officers will use the hand-held device during the hours of darkness when responding to reports of burglary and thefts. 'The camera allows us to detect body heat so there is nowhere for criminals to hide.
‘We also hope to use the camera for searching for lost or missing people and to identify premises that are involved in drugs offences.’ The Cumbria force takes delivery of its camera in a matter of days – not a moment too soon, after a spate of rural break-in
Hi-tech: The thermal image on a computer screen showing temperatures
Nowhere to hide: The camera catches a man behind a tree
Last week, thieves struck the cafe shop at the Eden Ostrich World tourist attraction in Langwathby as well as the Shepherds Inn in Melmerby, near Penrith, taking cash and alcohol.
Burglars tried and failed to get a safe at another rural hotel, one of 13 similar break-ins in the area since the start of February. More of the American-made FLIR H-Series hand-held cameras are expected to be snapped up by forces if the experiment proves a success

Stephen Tyrrell, executive chairman of Tec Security Services, has observed the growth of CCTV systems in Ireland, very much as an interested, and expert industry insider. His company was already very successful in winning contracts for CCTV systems from both private companies and public bodies, supplying the necessary hardware and support services from offices in Tallaght Business Centre. WhenTyrrell first heard of the plans from the Department of Justice to support community-based CCTVsystems in association with Pobal, he immediately saw the potential for his own company. Thanks to proper research and consultations with all the relevant parties involved in setting up and administering individual community-based schemes,Tec is now a leading supplier and adviser to community groups which apply for funding.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) has gained significant market presence and acceptance in Ireland over the last few years. The benefits in the field of security are widely appreciated and many organisations now employ the use of ANPR technology on a regular basis.
Hopefully, this article will remove the mystery behind ANPR and give you a clearer insight to the benefits associated with this product. Many people ask the question about the effectiveness of an ANPR system and wonder how it can deliver the task it has been assigned. A good analogy is to ask yourself what it is you are trying to achieve. Essentially, an ANPR system is the same as placing people on the side of the road and asking them manually record all the vehicle number plates they see travelling down the road.

Security Awareness of Pharmacies Don’t take people – or routines – for granted
Everywhere you look these days you will encounter some element of security, the presence of security guards, store detectives and of course there is the use of covert and overt cameras and access systems all there for one purpose, to prevent loss.
While prevention is better you also need detection of theft when it occurs, otherwise your retail outlet becomes known amongst the criminal fraternity as just a soft touch. If your pharmacy for instance falls into this category you can be sure that the theft is not confined to the whole families of criminals who are in and out of stores like swallows from a barn in nesting season.
